One of our weight loss patient asked me this question this morning and this seems to be a common problem amongst women during this phase. Some women go for sweet foods and others go for high glycemic carbohydrates like bread, potatoes, parantha, samosas, pastas and other starchy carbohydrates. There are some women who crave for both starchy carbohydrates and sweets at this time.
Why is this?
What happens is that after ovulation stage of menstrual cycle, a hormone called progesterone increases for few days until the body is sure that it is not pregnant, then the levels for this hormone drops rapidly until, just before the onset of periods. Just before periods levels of both hormones progesterone and oestrogen are low.
Progesterone is a calming hormone and oestrogen is stimulating one. When levels of progesterone fall just before periods you body may signal you that you need a source of calming and starch is the best of all foods to produce such effect.
So good healthy diets suggested by experts at NidSun go a long way in easing these problems and keep you on track to weight loss.
PS: It is important to avoid alcohol and coffee in premenstrual phases these can make those uncomfortable symptoms worst.
